How are your resolutions going so far?

In our first blog of 2022 ("Welcoming the tiger and the twos"), we discussed setting goals and the difference between motivation and discipline in achieving those goals. As an experiment, we committed that for the next two months we would research, write, and post a weekly blog on our website. We are incredibly happy to say that for the past 12 weeks we have stuck to our promise and succeeded in posting a blog every week. In this week's blog we reflect on our journey of making and sticking to a commitment and the lessons learnt along the way!

Spread the load

Luckily, there are two of us at Together Yoga. So, Prasi and I agreed to split the workload so that one person would write a blog every two weeks. Splitting the workload meant that alongside our teaching schedules, class planning and other commitments, this additional work was not overwhelming. It also meant that we were accountable to each other. If you are looking to achieve a physical goal, you can't ask someone else to do the exercise for you - but what you can do is ask them to join or to check in with you on your progress. Even just talking to someone about your goals helps to lessen the load and provides more incentive.

Plan ahead

There were times when Prasi and I knew we would be busy – we both had close family visiting us at the same time. I am now in Sri Lanka on holiday with my family - so I had to make time weeks in advance to write and schedule this blog. Planning and splitting your time into manageable chunks is way more achievable than waiting until the last minute and suddenly thinking - shoot I have to write that blog for tomorrow! One way Prasi and I encouraged each other to stick to the timeframe was by sending the draft to each other in advance - that way we could each provide helpful suggestions and also meant we had a process encouraging us to stick to the timeframe.

Life happens

Sometimes you can prepare as much as possible but then unexpected things happen and it throws things! For example, I did not plan to catch covid in March and this really set my schedule back, meaning I had to reassess plans. The key here is to not panic, but to reassess and be realistic. It might be that you do not reach your goal to 100% but as long as you're still moving in the right direction you can catch up once life settles again.

We hope our experience has given you motivation to achieve your goals and more importantly has shown some helpful ways to obtain that much needed discipline along the way! Keep practicing and moving forward!
