This week we continue to look at balancing Ayurvedic doshas, discussing in particular balancing the kapha dosha.
What does Kapha mean?

Pronounced "kuffa" this dosha is based on earth and water. People with a predominant kapha dosha tend to be calm, strong, thick boned and caring. They are known for keeping things together and being a support system for others. They rarely get upset, think before acting and go through life in a slow deliberate manner. If these traits sound familiar you may well be a kapha dosha!
What happens if there is a kapha imbalance?

In the event of imbalance, kapha people may be prone to weight gain, a slow metabolism and feeling sluggish. From a health perspective they may suffer from breathing issues such as asthma and are at higher risk of heart disease.

Balancing kapha with nutrition
In contrast to someone with predominant pitta, kaphas can grab a spoon when it comes to spicy and acidic foods. Most fruits and vegetables can be eaten, whole grains, eggs, low fat cheeses and unprocessed meats and hot spices are all recommended.
Food for kapha to avoid Kaphas should avoid heavy and fatty food (such as fats, processed foods, nuts and seeds). Using exercise to keep kapha in balance Kapha doshas benefit from having a workout buddy. Ideally a combination of cardio and weight exercise is best for them to stay interested and motivated (variety is key). Any form of movement/exercise is beneficial for a kapha as it avoids the tendency to feel lazy and sluggish.

So if you are someone who recognises the kapha personality traits within themselves but is struggling with feeling sluggish, try some of these nutritional and exercise suggestions to see if they make a positive difference. Namaste
